CrossFit Open 20.2 Predictions & Commentary

And just like that, we’re out of the gates with the 2020 - in 2019 which still weirds me out a little bit haha.

We saw that CrossFit Open Workout 20.1 was:

For Time:

8 Ground To Overhead - snatches or clean and jerks play

10 Bar-Facing Burpees

Over the weekend we saw some very gnarly scores on this thing with both men and women moving into the mid 8 minute mark on it. As of Monday morning when we wrote this article, virtually none of the top athletes had submitted their scores, so we’d expect a lot of jockeying for position this afternoon.

When Annie T and Sara S went head to head in 20.1 - HERE - It looked like Sara went about 8:36 and Annie went 8:45...yikes.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see Scott Panchik or Rich Froning repeat the workout and improve markedly on it - remember Scott was 9:20-something and Rich was just under 10 min. Perhaps they will let it go, though, because they are now working together on the CrossFit Mayhem team.

What Did We Notice In CrossFit Open 20.1?

Some things that we picked up from CrossFit Open 20.1:

Rogue continues to take a bigger and bigger hand in the production of the CrossFit Games. They ran their Iron Games media crew to Austin to do the announcement, and they had Rogue Athletes on the stage with them. I’d expect that style to remain and wouldn’t be surprised if we learned that an Open athlete who isn’t currently a Rogue Athlete becomes a Rogue athlete after they do the announcement.

We also noticed that everybody and their brother giving tips and tricks for 20.1 via YouTube, social media, and everywhere in between. That makes us think that this democratization of the Games will continue. The big question will become are CrossFit Gym enthusiasts playing a sport every day they attend CrossFit class, or are they doing something “different” than these unbelievable athletes doing the Open and Games?

With CrossFit’s push to health, it’s going to be a very interesting dynamic between the Games and the Gyms.

What Will CrossFit Open 20.2 Workout Be?

OPEX RC Coaches are getting more split on this one, but you’ll notice that they are bringing in more simplicity of movements as well as gym setups.

Personally, I still believe that the movements will remain more simple mainly because I’m assuming the Open will remain more inclusive, so it mustn’t be brutal to set up for gym owners.

At this point in the week, the Dave Castro’s Instagram is noticeably quiet, so we’d have to roll with the old workout images or the image of the small ponies from a week ago haha - below. He always makes it funny to look week by week which brings a more entertaining sense to the whole things.

Ok, enough banter, here are some of our educated (or not haha) guesses for CrossFit Open 20.2 workout:

Henry Torano thinks we’ll see a similar, muscle up, double under, wallball workout that we’ve seen in the past except with a little twist:

11 Min AMRAP

6 Muscle Up - MU

30 Double Under - DU

30 Wallball 20#/14# to 10’/9’ - WB

30 DU

Sam Smith also believes we’ll see wallballs, double-unders, and muscle ups, but he went straight to 15.3:

7 Ring Muscle Up - MU

50 Wallball 20#/14# to 10’/9’ - WB

100 Double Unders - DU

Will Trujillo thinks we’re going back to 2017 with a look back to 17.2:

12 Min AMRAP

2 rounds of:

 50-ft. weighted walking lunge 50#/35# - DBWL

16 toes-to-bars - T2B

8 DB power cleans 50#/35# - DBPC

Then, 2 rounds of:

50-ft. DBWL 50#/35#

16 bar muscle-ups - BMU

8 DB power cleans 50#/35# - DBPC

Carl Hardwick believes we’re going way back to 2012 with a repeat of the snatch ladder with CrossFit Open Workout 12.2:

10 Min AMRAP

30 reps Power Snatch 75#/45#

30 reps Power Snatch 135#/75#

30 reps Power Snatch 165#/100#

Max reps Power Snatch 210#/120#

Megan Mondelli wonders if we may see a heavy barbell movement because majority of Open's second workouts feature a heavy lift:

5 Deadlifts - M-315 lbs. / F-205 lbs.

Allison White also believes we’ll see an 18.2 derivative, but she thinks DB snatch vs DB squat:

I believe we’re going to go simply and quickly both for video purposes as well as for the affiliates to have easy setups and movement through the workout. So, I’ll predict this old school goodie for CrossFit Open 20.2 Workout:

5 Min AMRAP

Squat Clean to Overhead 165# 115#

Back in 2011, Rich Froning did 46 rounds - a round is the clean and the jerk - plus an additional clean to win the worldwide Open. I’d be curious to see where many athletes are now. 9 reps/rounds per minute gives you 45 rounds
