Exploring Values Through Journaling

Distraction is the only thing that consoles us of our miseries yet it is itself the greatest of our miseries.

In Part 1 of Journal Exercises, we explored fitness, competition, achievement and how those intertwine in our lives. In part 2, we are going to get a little deeper and potentially a little more uncomfortable. We are going to explore our values; where uncertainty resides in our lives; what surprises and excites us about life; what we have, or could have, learned from failure; and, where do we find meaning?

How to Journal More Effectively:

●      use a pen and paper, don’t use a computer

●      aim to write for at least 10 consecutive minutes

●      be as descriptive as possible (the more detail the better)

●      allow yourself to pursue whatever avenues arise as you start to write

“We suffer more in imagination than in reality.”

DAY 1. Question 1:

Write down 4 values you aim to embody each day that you believe define a truly successful life. These could also be called your “core values.”

Provide insight as to why you chose each of them

DAY 2. Question 2:

What areas of your life are you embodying your core values the most? What areas the least?

DAY 3. Question 3:

Where you do you feel restlessness in your life? Why is that present? How can you work to change that?

DAY 4. Question 4:

What do you love about life?

In general and unique to your own life

DAY 5. Question 5:

What’s surprised you the most about life?

In general and unique to your own life

DAY 6. Question 6:

What have you learned from your most recent failure? How has that experience made you stronger?

DAY 7. Question 7:

Where do you find meaning? Why do you find it in “that”?
